Commitment 6: Educational Outreach
Through distance education, I have sought to reach students who would otherwise be unable to attend the institution and to promote lifelong learning among the general public. I have offered four courses through our university's instructional television program which provides educational programming on KUHT, Houston's public television station:
- American History Through Film
- The History of Private Life
- The Making of Ethnic America, and
- The Americas: Identity, Culture, and Power, a team-taught introduction to the peoples and cultures of the Western Hemisphere.
I have been especially interested in developing distance education learning environments that promote understanding and engagement through student discussion, activities, and opportunities for immediate interaction with the instructor.
